Overview
The Bachelor of Commerce Honours (BCom Hons) is an undergraduate programme that provides in-depth knowledge of commerce, finance, and business management. Traditionally offered as a three-year course across six semesters, its duration and structure may vary under the university’s undergraduate framework.
The programme builds a foundation in accounting, economics, finance, taxation, business law, marketing, and human resource management. Electives allow students to explore areas that match their interests and career goals.
BCom Honours eligibility generally requires completion of Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board. Many institutions require at least 50% aggregate marks, although minimum scores, subject requirements, and eligibility for different streams vary.
Admission to BCom Hons may be merit-based or entrance-based. Some institutions accept CUET UG or conduct their own selection process. Group discussions and personal interviews may be required by certain colleges. Applications can be submitted online or offline, according to institutional guidelines.
The BCom Honours syllabus commonly includes:
- Financial Accounting
- Business Communication
- Microeconomics and Macroeconomics
- Business Mathematics and Statistics
- Business Law
- Auditing
- Income Tax and GST
- Business Finance and Management
- Marketing Management
- Computerised Accounting
Through assignments, projects, and practical activities, students develop analytical, financial, and business communication skills.
Graduates can explore entry-level opportunities in accounting, audit support, banking, investment analysis, financial research, and corporate finance. Potential employers include companies, banks, financial services firms, and brokerage houses.
Indicative starting salaries after BCom Hons range from INR 3–6 lakh per annum, depending on skills, role, employer, and location. Further qualifications such as CA, CS, CMA, or MBA can support specialised career paths and professional growth.
Eligibility
The basic eligibility criteria for pursuing a BCom Honours degree at most colleges and universities in India include the completion of 10+2 or an equivalent examination in any stream – Arts, Commerce or Science. Students need to have passed their 10+2 exams with minimum aggregate marks, usually 50% or more. Maths is not always a compulsory subject for all BCom Honours programs unlike for general BCom degrees. However, some specialised programs like BCom Honours in Accounting may require Maths in 10+2.
Apart from academic qualifications, certain colleges and universities have additional eligibility criteria based on entrance test scores. Reputed institutions like Delhi University, Christ University etc. conduct their own entrance tests for admission into BCom Honours programs. Students have to apply for and qualify in these tests with minimum cut-off scores. There are also centralised tests like the CUET into which scores are accepted. Some colleges also take into account 12th board percentage, academic performance in relevant subjects like Accountancy, and extra-curricular achievements when admitting students. The eligibility criteria may vary across colleges. Students must thoroughly verify the prerequisites and admission process well in advance before applying to the program. Meeting the eligibility criteria is imperative for successful admission into reputed colleges for the BCom Honours degree.
