Overview

GNM stands for General Nursing and Midwifery. It is a three-year diploma programme, including internship, that prepares students for nursing and patient care responsibilities. The course combines classroom learning with supervised clinical training to develop practical nursing skills.

For admission, candidates generally need to complete 10+2 with English, securing at least 40% in the qualifying examination and in English individually. Science is preferred, but candidates from other streams can also apply. Qualifications from recognised State Open Schools and NIOS are accepted under the applicable eligibility guidelines.

GNM admission follows the selection process prescribed by the relevant state authority or institution, which may include an entrance examination or merit-based selection. The programme involves regular classroom attendance and practical clinical training.

Annual GNM course fees may range from approximately ₹30,000 to ₹2.5 lakh, depending on the institution. Students should check the complete fee structure, including hostel, examination and other charges, before applying.

After completing the programme and meeting the applicable nursing registration requirements, graduates can pursue nursing opportunities in hospitals, clinics, community health centres and other healthcare settings. Career growth and earnings depend on clinical skills, experience, additional qualifications and the employer.
