Doctorate of Medicine (DM) Course Overview

The Doctorate of Medicine (DM) is a super-speciality medical qualification that provides advanced training in a specific medical discipline. It focuses on specialist clinical practice, patient management, and research rather than serving as a conventional research doctorate.

The programme typically lasts three years after an eligible postgraduate medical qualification. Training combines theoretical study, supervised clinical practice, practical procedures, and research methodology. Students also develop professional communication and decision-making skills.

DM eligibility requires a recognised postgraduate qualification in the prescribed feeder speciality. The accepted qualification depends on the chosen specialisation and applicable admission rules.

DM admission is generally entrance-based. Admission routes include NEET SS for participating institutions and INI SS for participating Institutes of National Importance. Applicants should confirm the examination and eligibility requirements for their preferred programme.

Popular DM specialisations include:

  • Cardiology
  • Neurology
  • Medical Oncology
  • Nephrology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Clinical Haematology
  • Neonatology
  • Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology

The course requires in-person clinical training and cannot be completed through distance or fully online learning. Stipends depend on the institution, appointment terms, and applicable policies.

Institutions to explore include AIIMS New Delhi, Christian Medical College Vellore, St. John’s Medical College, Ramaiah Medical College, Kasturba Medical College Manipal, and IMS BHU. Available specialisations and admission requirements differ across institutions.

Indicative DM fees range from INR 20,000 to INR 15 lakh, depending on the institution and programme. Applicants should confirm whether the amount represents annual tuition or the total course fee.

Graduates can pursue careers as specialist consultants, clinical researchers, or medical educators, subject to professional and recruitment requirements. Their clinical role depends on the specialisation completed—for example, Cardiologist, Neurologist, Nephrologist, Endocrinologist, or Medical Oncologist.
